instructions

Choose the type of map to display by clicking on Map (with optional Terrain) or Satellite (with optional Labels for place names etc) in the map window.

To adjust the area displayed, left-click on the map surface and drag the map in any direction you like, as if sliding a paper map across a table.

To zoom in or out, click the + or - buttons, or use your mouse scroll wheel while pressing Ctrl.

the marker

The marker allows you to obtain a grid reference or longitude/latitude for a particular point on the map. You can read these in the marker location box. The Ordnance Survey 10km and 2km (tetrad) squares containing the marked location are plotted on the map.

To move the marker, simply drag it across the map surface. The map will automatically re-centre on the marker position.

If the marker is no longer in the centre of the page (or no longer visible at all), there are two shortcuts to bring it back to the centre. Firstly, you can click the button in the go to box labelled the marker location. This will 'slide' the map surface so that the marked location is in the centre.

Alternatively, you can click the button in the options box labelled reset marker. This will leave the same map area displayed, but the marker will now be in the centre.

shortcuts and searches

To zoom the map onto a Scottish recording area, select one of the areas from the drop-down list in the go to box. An outline of the area will be displayed.

To centre the map on a particular grid reference or postcode area, enter the reference or code in the go to box and press the go button.

To search for a place (town, hill, loch etc) or postcode, enter its name in the search box and press the go button. Any matches found will be displayed; click on the one you want and its location will be marked on the map. Note that the spacing of your search text can be important. For example "whitesands" and "white sands" will return different sites. Entering the county after a place name can also influence the search.

recording areas

To see all of the Scottish recording areas outlined on the map, click the tick-box in the options box. To hide them, click on the tick-box again. Note that the areas are mapped very accurately, and can take a few moments to load up for the first time.

get page address

Click this button in the options box to display a web address (URL) for the current map. This address includes the map's zoom level, centre location, and map type (but other settings such as marker position are not captured). You can copy and paste the address into a web page or other document to provide a link to a map like the one currently displayed.
